10 Ways to Go Green At Work and Celebrate Earth Day!

This year, we celebrate Earth Day on April 22, 2010. Earth Day allows everyone to become more aware of the environment, and their impact on their surroundings. It's a day to promote awareness and show your appreciation for the earth. It's too easy to be oblivious to your surroundings, this Earth Day be aware of where you are, and how your everyday life affects our Earth.

Tiger Leasing has put together a 10 tips to help you celebrate Earth Day at your office.

  • Turn off the lights! If your office has enough windows, rely on natural light to get you through your day. If the sunshine doesn't reach you at work, make sure to turn the lights off when you leave a room for more than 10 minutes.

  • Put your computer to sleep! Utilize your computer's sleep mode to save energy when you're not at your desk. Set your computer to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity.

  • Rethink that ink! Do you really need to print off that document? Printing wastes paper, energy and more. If you can get by reading the page online, do it. If you have to print, make sure you're printing on both sides of the paper.

  • Buy recycled office supplies! From paper and pens to DVDs and mouse pads, there is typically an environmentally friendly option when you need new office supplies. Be aware of what you use, and how it affects the environment.

  • Buy in bulk! When possible, combine your orders so that you don't need to make multiple trips to the store. When ordering in bulk, you cut down on the amount of delivery travel and packaging.

  • Recycle! This should go without saying. Recycle what you can. Look for new programs and initiatives to make it worthwhile for your co-workers to recycle as well.

  • Use Fair Trade certified or organic products! Office coffee is a big deal. Some people need that cup of joe to get through the day. Why not invest in Fair Trade Certified or Organic coffee and cut down on the impact you're having on the environment?

  • Reuse those plates! Ditch the paper plates and plastic forks, invest in some reusable utensils and you'll make your lunch breaks a little greener.

  • Go digital! Zip drives are affordable and can cut down on paper and space. Utilize digital file storage and make some room in your office!

  • Grow something green! Once you've cut down on that paper and filing, you'll have room for some plants in your office! They will absorb any air pollution around your desk and brighten up your work space as well!
Earth Day may be a once a year celebration, but respecting the earth should be a full time commitment. You don't have to make any huge life changes to make a difference. Just be more aware of your actions and make the small changes that really add up for the environment!

Happy Earth Day!

Get Fit at the Office!

Spring is just around the corner, and as important as health is throughout the year, spring is a great time to focus on getting in shape. Work schedules and personal lives usually don't make working out convenient, but that's really no excuse. Taking care of your health is important, and everyone should make time for it.

To lose weight, it is important to keep two things in mind. Move more and eat less. It's as simple and as complicated as that. Tiger Leasing has put together some simple ideas for getting fit from the office, so you don't have any excuses.

  • For those who drive to work, make a commitment to parking a little further away, so you can get more steps in every day. Walk briskly, pump your arms and watch your posture.

  • Take the stairs whenever possible. If you work on the fifth floor, take the stairs for a few flights, and take the elevator the rest of the way up if you need to. You can start small, but you will be doing a huge favor to your health by just taking the stairs. Not ready to take the stairs? Do the step motion in other places to get your body in shape. Look for curbs wherever you are, gas stations, parking lots, etc. and take a few steps up and down.

  • Move, just move. Fidget, twitch, get restless. Jumping jacks and jogging aren't the only activities that burn calories. Tap your feet while you're sitting at your computer. Stand up while talking on the phone. Take a lap around the office every hour and stretch your legs. The added movement can burn more calories per day than you expect, and that will result in a higher weight loss.

  • Get a Swiss ball, also called an exercise ball, to replace your office chair. You will be strengthening your balance and your core muscles. This simple swap allows you to burn more calories without ever leaving your seat!

  • Find other people at your office that are as fit- minded as you are. Interact with others that share your healthy goals. From exchanging healthy snack ideas to taking walks together during a break, finding support at work can boost your chances of success.

  • Schedule your meals so that you're eating at regular intervals every day. This will keep you from getting that "starving" feeling when you go too long between meals. This technique has also been shown to support a higher metabolism and regulate blood sugar levels. Pack healthy snacks like fruit or nuts to eat throughout the day.

  • Count those calories. No more mindless nibbling, pay attention to what you're eating, and how much of it you're eating. Figure out and track your daily nutritional needs with the help of Web sites like NutritionData.com or MyPyramid.gov. Simply being conscious of what you're eating can help you save hundreds of calories, and pounds.

  • Drink more water. There have been many reports saying how much water you should drink a day, but in all reality, there is no magic number. Water does a lot more for your body than just quenching your thirst. You'll save calories by choosing water over sugary juices. Water also has the power to cleanse toxins from your vital organs and it helps to carry important nutrients to cells. The health benefits of drinking water are huge, so trade in that vending machine beverage and fill up at the water cooler instead.

Getting healthy doesn't necessarily mean spending hours a day in the gym or giving up all of your favorite foods. There are little steps you can take while you're at work that will get you on the right track to a healthier life.

The Year of the Tiger

The Chinese Zodiac dictates that 2010 is the year of the Tiger!

The year of the Tiger occurs every twelfth year. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, which starts a New Year on the first of January every year, the Chinese New Year doesn't fall on a specific date. The year of the Tiger begins on February 14, 2010 and ends February 2, 2011.

In the past, the year of the Tiger has occurred in 1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986 and 1998. According to Chinese tradition, people born in these years share certain common traits. The Tiger is a sign of courage, self-reliance, friendliness, hopefulness, and resilience. Those born in the year of the Tiger are said to be sensitive, intellectual thinkers and extremely sympathetic as well as brave and influential.

Tigers are clever and sharp-witted. These traits make them fast learners. In business, Tigers are natural born leaders, and work best when they know they are working towards important goals. Tiger Leasing has written a short, entertaining story - "The Tiger and the Money Tree". You'll find ancient wisdom and secrets for growing your "Money Tree" with Tiger Leasing. Tiger Leasing works hard to make sure all of our customers are successful when working towards their important goals.

Tiger Leasing's Top Ten Favorite New Year's Resolutions...

New Year's Even may be over, but the year has just begun! Here at Tiger Leasing, we've put together our favorite goals for the New Year. What are you going to focus on changing in 2010? What steps are you taking to make sure your resolutions and goals become a reality? Let us know in the comments section!

10.) Learn Something - Broadening your horizons by learning something new is a great goal for 2010. Whether you've always wanted to learn a new language, or you've been looking to improve your computer skills, there are resources everywhere. Check out your local schools and colleges for classes they offer. Head over to the library for books on the subject. Ask your family, friends or business network for resources and tools to help you learn something new!

9.) Make an Appointment - When was the last time you had a health check up, a dental exam, or a massage? Book an appointment you've been putting off, for whatever reason. Take care of yourself in 2010.

8.) Go Green - Why not do a little something for the environment this year? Did you know that washing your clothes in cold water is good for the environment? Frequent the local Farmer's Market when it warms up and support the earth and your neighbors. Pick up some houseplants for the office, they will be easy on the eyes and good for the lungs! You don't have to do anything drastic to make your life a little greener.

7.) Join Up - Is there a professional organization you've been interested in joining? Have your friends been asking you to commit to a basketball league or book club? Joining a new group will allow you to meet new people, explore your hobbies, and create a more balanced, active lifestyle.

6.) Help Others - By doing something for a family member, friend or complete stranger; you will be making a difference. Donate your old clothes, give to the food pantry or take an animal from the local shelter for a walk. Get a group together to do any of these things, and you'll be making more of a difference than you know.

5.) Go Somewhere New - Whether you've had your eye on that new book store, or you've always wanted to go to Scotland, make this your year to explore somewhere new. You never know what you'll find, and it will add a sense of excitement and adventure. Make 2010 memorable by discovering a new destination.

4.) Embrace Change - Let your life change, and be happy about those changes. Change is good, and allows you to grow personally and professionally. While change isn't always easy, look for the best in every situation and help others see the good in transformations as well.

3.) Get Healthy - According to the Obesity Society, "Obesity is the most prevalent, fatal, chronic, relapsing disorder of the 21st century." Make the time to do something for your health, whether you replace that morning doughnut with a piece of fruit or start heading to the gym for some exercise, it's important to take the time and make the decisions to benefit your health.

2.) Communicate More - Who doesn't get caught up in their own day to day problems? How many of those problems arise from miscommunications? Work on really listening to what other people are saying. Make sure your words and nonverbal cues are really conveying what it is your feeling. Have more conversations with the people who matter the most to you. Open new lines of communication at work and at home.

1.) Have Fun - Life is Fun, and it's important to take note of the moments when that is obvious! Recognize the little things that make life enjoyable, and focus on them! Take the time to create more of those moments, and have fun in your life, both at work and at home.
